Hearts and Buttons

Button is still lost, but we believe she has moved south to another area.  We need your help canvassing the area, posting flyers or leaving them door-to-door, talking with people, and all the while keeping an eye out for Button.

This week we will try to cover the Wedgwood and View Ridge areas as well as the Burke-Gilman Trail from Matthews Beach Park southward.  Here's a map of the area we want to cover (sections 8-12).

Who:  Any and every able-bodied person. Please forward this to anyone you think may be able to help out.

What:  An 'all-hearts on deck' effort to find Button, one of the KC Rescue Basenjis who is lost, and to distribute and post flyers in the area where she was last seen.

When:  Saturday, February 14, 10:00am until mid-afternoon

Where:  Matthews Beach Park just north of Sand Point.  Meet in the parking lot at NE 94th St. and Sand Point Way (here's a map of the area: http://mappoint.msn.com/(tf1pzn55oki3kz45lsia3o45)/map.aspx?L=USA&C=47.69549%2c-122.27424&A=7.16667&P=|80D1F211|&TI=Matthews+Beach+Park+(park)%2c+Washington%2c+United+States)

Some Background:

Button is no ordinary dog. She is one of the 160 dogs rescued from the home of a Kansas City woman in October (several local stations reported the story and it made the national news as well). And she has been missing nearly two weeks since Saturday night, January 31.

You may recall that the KC dogs, nearly all of them purebred Basenjis, lived confined in crates for months on end, living in their own filth in a house without electricity. Button and five other Basenjis were transported to foster homes in the Pacific Northwest in December. After a recovering sufficiently from her ordeal, she was placed in her adopting home in Lake Forest Park last Saturday (1/31). Later that night, she accidentally escaped and has been missing ever since.

Button first headed down the Burke-Gilman Trail so we focused our initial efforts in that area, posting flyers and walking it many times over hoping to at least catch a glimpse of her. Despite everything, we came up empty handed. On Tuesday evening we got a break – the groundskeepers at the Acacia Cemetery in Northeast Seattle/Lake Forest Park had seen her several times on Monday and Tuesday hanging out in the wooded areas there. We spent the evening combing the grounds but to no avail. She did not show up the next day at all, so she probably moved on. Last Saturday (2/7) we canvassed the area from Hamlin Park to Matthews Beach Park, but we have not received any sightings.

This week we will try to cover the Wedgwood and View Ridge areas as well as the Burke-Gilman Trail from Matthews Beach Park southward.

Because of her isolation, Button had little contact with humans. She is extremely shy and skittish, terrified by people and any sudden gestures or loud noises. It is unlikely that she will approach someone who calls to her. Anyone who spots her should not try to capture her, but instead should report the time and location to the Button Search Party Central Command Post.

Contact Info:

Since I was one of Button's foster caregivers and have a better understanding of her and her situation, the owners have asked me to serve as their spokesperson. If you have questions or would like to discuss this, please feel free to contact me.
