Canine Phenome Project

A Step-by-Step Walkthrough to Signup and Enroll Your Basenjis

Taking part in the Canine Phenome Project is easy with the services provided on the Canine Phenome Project website.  You can signup in the project, enroll your dogs, submit DNA samples, provide related pedigree and health information, and follow the status of the project right from the site.

The basic steps are:

  1. Use the Signup process to create a profile for yourself and generate a temporary password.  Use the temporary password to Login the first time and then change your password for future Logins.
  2. Use the Enroll process to add a dog to your profile and to generate a DNA Submission form.  You can either complete the surveys for your dog now or wait until after step 3.
  3. Bring the completed DNA Submission form to the Blood Draw Clinic so it can be sent along with the blood sample.

Each of these steps is outlined in greater detail below.

Whether you're going to signup for the project, enroll each of your dogs, or update information, you always start at the home page of the Canine Phenome Project by following this link:  http://www.caninephenome.org.

  1. On the Welcome page, click the Enroll a new dog link.  The Enroll page appears.
  2. Fill in the blanks in the Identification section, including breed, registration number (without the -, \, or/) and organization, registered name (without titles), prefix and suffix titles, call name, gender, birth date, and the registered names and numbers of the sire and dam.  If you have previously supplied a blood sample to the University of Missouri, then select Yes from the Previous Sample drop down, otherwise leave it as No.
  3. Click the Enroll button at the bottom of the form.  A DNA Submission form appears.
  4. PRINT THE DNA SUBMISSION FORM AND BRING IT WITH YOU TO THE BLOOD DRAW CLINIC!  Be sure to circle TWO places near the bottom to indicate whether you are or are not willing to supply additional blood samples and whether you will or will not consider donating tissue samples upon the death of this dog.  Then sign and date the form.  BRING THIS FORM WITH YOU TO THE BLOOD DRAW CLINIC!  If you’re not able to print the form, at least write down your Genome ID number.
  5. Click the Continue link at the top of the DNA Submission Form.  The dogs Profile page appears.  From here you can edit the information in the profile, supply a photo of your dog, work with entries for your dog's Medical record or a diary, view or submit DNA samples, or complete the four surveys that are required to finalize your enrollment.

Surveys

To complete your dog's enrollment in the Canine Phenome Project, you must complete four short surveys needed for the research.  Once you've completed them, you may return at any time to update your answers.  Begin these, by clicking the specific survey link at the bottom of your dog's profile page.  Note:  It is NOT necessary to complete the surveys prior to submitting blood.

Pedigree

You'll be asked to supply the Registration Number and Registered Name for each of the parents and grandparents of your dog.

Breed Health Survey

You'll be asked if your dog has been strip-tested for the presence of glucose in the urine, and whether it has been diagnosed with Fanconi Syndrome.  You'll also be asked to supply dates of the last strip-test and the last negative strip-test.

General Health Survey

You'll be asked several questions pertaining to the health of your dog.  Follow-up questions may appear depending on how you answer initial questions.  Skip any questions you aren't sure of.

Dog's Characteristics

You'll be asked a range of questions about your dog's height, weight, coat length and color, markings, eyes, teeth, feet, and behavior.  Skip the items you don't know off-hand, and then update your survey when you have the information requested.
